Pottery by Lani Callahan
I am a potter currently based in Kyoto, Japan. I love to work with clay in its every stage, from throwing on the wheel, to trimming a foot, to designing with glaze, brush, or fire alone. Each stage is an aesthetic decision but the final one, when firing in a woodfire kiln, is less one’s own decision and more of a collaboration with nature. I am attracted to the woodfire aesthetic, since it is the power of the fire that makes the defining marks on the pot. Using such objects functionally can bring natural beauty to every day life. A large part of why I make pots is to bring art into daily life and to recognize the value of the handmade object.
