Weaving Australia
Brenda Goggs is a tapestry weaver living in Canberra, ACT Australia. She designs and weaves her own tapestry designs in modern wall hangings. Her work as a weaver focuses on ideas related to the Australian land and landscape. The notion "Weaving Australia" in tapestry designs has led to my preoccupation with the following themes that have developed in my wall tapestries:
• The exploration and subsequent colonisation of Australia by white settlers.
• How we come to terms with our presence in someone else's land.
• Exterior space verses interior personal space within the land.
• What makes a sacred site? Can the land be a spiritual home, and what does this mean?
• How do we feel "at home" in the land?
• "First-hand" and "second-hand" experience. Is one more authentic than the other?
• The boundaries between things, e.g. landscape and reading, music and landscape, poetry and pictures, ducking and weaving, nature and nurture, home and exile, seeing and believing, reason and imagination.
• Naming and classifying: to gain control, to tame the wild, to own and order what we see, we sort and weed the landscape.
